Great News Marylanders!
via Marine Trades Association of Maryland (MTAM)

Maryland boaters with vessels (preferably catamarans) valued over $300,000 will be pleased to learn that Maryland's State Senate has passed Senate Bill 90 (SB90).

SB90

  • SB90 caps the 5% excise tax on boats intended to principally be used in Maryland at $15,000. This directly affects boat owners with vessels worth more than $300,000.

Effect on industry

  • Incentive for residents of Maryland to purchase and dock their vessel in Maryland.
  • Potential for an increase in revenues and employment for the state's coastline.
  • Opportunities for maintenance and repair and storage along the biggest shoreline and with the most marinas than of the neighboring states.

SB90 helps business

  • Every six boats registered in Maryland leads to another full-time job.
  • Will attract larger and more expensive boats to Maryland, which translates into more maritime business.

SB90 helps Maryland

  • Increase in revenue, jobs and tourism.
  • Increase boating in the Chesapeake Bay, which already offers some of the best boating in the industry.
  • More favorable water temperature than the New England area, which could drive boaters south.

SB90 and boat sales

  • In 2008 Maryland boat sales were $248.5 million. Maryland boat sales in 2010 were $183 million. In 2011 boat sales dropped to $162 million.
  • 2011 was the eighth consecutive year in which the state of Maryland registered fewer boats than the previous year.
  • Should increase boat sales in Maryland, currently ranked 26th nationally in overall value of boat sales.

How to help SB90 become a success

  • Begin promoting Maryland as a boating destination now.
  • There is a 2016 sunset provision on SB90 which means the bill will cease to exist unless further legislative action is taken.
  • Report any purchase made in Maryland due to the tax cap to MTAM.
